Just for today
We’ve all heard that thoughts become things. To fully grasp, or even consider this statement is difficult. It’s both an incredible gift to know, and an enormous responsibility to consider.
Day to day, it’s easy to fall into automated ways of thinking about and relating to the world around us. Over time this forms a ‘shape’ if you will, of who we are and what our role is in any given situation. This in turn can shape the broader beliefs we hold about ourselves.
What we believe about ourselves dictates our entire experience. More specifically how we perceive our worth, our limitations, and what we have to offer to the world. A lot of these are deeply cemented in us from past experiences, and are fundamentally not our own. Others form gradually over time from the way we approach certain people and situations.
Maybe you believe that you’re not a happy person, a loveable person, or a beautiful person. Maybe you only just realised now that you’d bought into any of these beliefs. But what if, just for today, you were happy, loveable, beautiful, and everything else that you desire to be?
Big things come from little things. The Reiki principles, Gokai, encapsulate this sentiment perfectly. Rather than demanding instant transformation of old beliefs or dramatic personal change, the Gokai are a commitment to simply choosing in the now. In other words, we don’t need or commit to being one thing completely and forever all at once. You can do it “just for today”.
Just for today, I will not anger.
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will be grateful.
Just for today, I will work with intention.
Just for today, I will be kind to all living beings.
Inside each one of us is an incredible amount of power. We have the potential to choose each day who we want to show up as in the world, and thereby the experience that we will have. So start small. Think about the life you want and the person you want to be and try it on, just for today.
Just for today, I am unlimited.
